People Portal already making a difference
Shropshire Chamber of Commerce has secured vital funding from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to roll-out its video CV service, People Portal, to jobseekers across the county. With 236 spaces available, many individuals looking for work have secured their space in the programme – with some even finding their dream roles as a result.
The People Portal service enables job seekers to create their own professional video CV for employers to view on the www.scocpeopleportal.com website, as well as receive bespoke business-led training to support them in their search for employment. Out of those already taking part in the free programme, 100% would recommend People Portal to others and 100% were very to fully satisfied.
Elizabeth Butler, Telford
44 year old Elizabeth Butler of Telford, who was seeking work in the region, explained: “Before I took part in People Portal I wasn’t very positive about my future job prospects. I hadn’t received training like that included in People Portal before, so was very keen to give it a go. My confidence has grown tenfold and now it’s just up to me now how I utilise the skills and tools I gained. Throughout the programme I had a great mentor who assured and guided me, and I left feeling more confident than I have in quite a while.”
Len Cook, Telford
Len was made redundant at 59, right at the very height of the recession, and after eighteen months of job seeking, had almost given up hope of finding a role. “I didn’t see the redundancy coming, and even though I joined every recruitment agency and applied for every job possible, I still wasn’t able to find work,” Len explained. “I networked as much as possible, practically lived in the Job Centre, and sent more than 300 applications off, but was only ever invited to four interviews and none of those were successful.
“Unless you’ve been in the situation, you don’t realise just how demoralising a searching for work for a long period of time is, and to be honest we had to spend all of our savings and redundancy money just to cover the mortgage and the bills. It doesn’t take long for your self-esteem and your sense of self-worth to hit the floor, and it gets harder and harder to pick yourself up after every rejection.
“It’s not even as though you can learn from the experiences either, as no-one really provides any feedback. I knew that my age would be against me and at 61 had almost given up, but when I was offered the chance to take part in the People Portal trial last year with the Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, I decided I had nothing to lose so went for it.
“I was really nervous to begin with but they coached me fully through the whole process and for what felt like the first time, I was able to get across my passion for the transport sector and my experience in a way that I just couldn’t on paper. It all obviously worked, as I’m in a great new role and loving it! My wife says that I’m a different person and she’s so pleased to see me come home from work happy and fulfilled, with my confidence growing again every day.”
Benefits for Job Seekers:
People Portal enables candidates to truly showcase their skills, experience and personality via a professionally-produced video CV. Funding secured by Shropshire Chamber of Commerce means that jobseekers across the county have the exclusive opportunity to undertake two intensive business-led training courses so they can showcase their unique selling point and have their own professionally-polished video CV made – all at no cost.
Extensive skills training provided
Confidence to evidence who they really are and what they can do
Comfort of making the video in their own time
Increased chance of CV views
Why Is There a Need for A Video CV Service?
Traditionally, people use CVs to evidence their skills, work history, experience, hobbies and interests relevant to a role. But it just doesn’t give employers a true representation on who they are as individuals, and due to the volume of CVs received – with an average of 250 submitted for every vacancy – the perfect candidate can be easily overlooked or missed.
With People Portal it’s different. Each candidate has their own professional video – categorised for the area of work they’re skilled or interested in – so employers have an easy-to-access catalogue of candidates that they can view at their ultimate convenience.
